The Modern Portrait in Nineteenth-Century France
Published in Hardcover by Cambridge University Press (February, 2001)
Author: Heather McPherson
Average review score:

ABOUT FACE
Changing the perceptions of the painted portrait as a social, artistic and intellectual document, THE MODERN PORTRAIT IN 19TH CENTURY FRANCE is a fascinating and compelling read for both the avid art historian and the novice to the subject. While addressing the importance and impact photography had on re-evaluating the issues of representation and the translation of figurative ideology and assumptions in portraiture, McPherson maintains a succinct style which concisely synthesizes historical context and argument with contemporary proposal and re-assessment.

Astute observations and comparisons are accessible, tangible and give insight and depth to the evolution of this genre of painting and its modification in response to the recourse of changing technology. Six case studies present artists, public personas and writers in a cross-referential consideration of major influences shaping the revision of aesthetic standards to include the dichotomy of the specificity of image and visage with the universality of shared emotion and experience.

The discussion broadens the complex relationships between identity and culture and well-evinced scholarship and satisfying reasoning make the book contemplative and engaging.

More Than Meat Joy: Performance Works and Selected Writings
Published in Paperback by McPherson & Co (December, 1997)
Authors: Carolee Schneemann and Bruce R. McPherson
Average review score:

A must have for artists, feminists, humans.........
Carolee Schneemann has enjoyed a long, fascinating life and career. Art History courses often cover her work but choose to focus on "Interior Scroll", "Site" (Robert Morris) and "Meat Joy". Carolee Schneemann has been working consistently since the 1960s and is sold short in these courses. She is a maverick of 20th century art in performance, video and installation; not to mention a gifted writer, thinker who shows us all that we can, in fact be closer to ourselves, as living art and artists of dailyness and magic.

I laugh out loud
I'm a fan of many cartoonists, but none make me laugh out loud as often as John McPherson's panels. His humor in this book reminds me of Gary Larson, but connects more closely to everyday life. He sees the humor in reality so that he only occasionally has to twist it.

Negro's Civil War
Published in Paperback by Univ of Illinois Pr (Txt) (December, 1982)
Authors: James M. McPherson and James M. McPhearson
Average review score:

Definitely a Must Read!!!
James McPherson successfully recounts the Negro's feelings and actions during and somewhat after the Civil War. The author uses a compilation of letters written by actual heroes of this revolutionary period to tell a story that is heard by few. Educators often share the many distinct battles and strategies both sides engaged in and created during the war. However, students seldom learn the grand history of the war that could only be learned by giving a broader sense of the account- a feat only accomplished when one studies those who were most affected by the war. Mr McPherson's usage of speeches and actual letters allow the reader to transcend time with the upper hand of hindsight having 20/20 vision! The interjections that McPherson interpolates into the scheme keep the flow of the different works so well tied at times it appears as though the authors worked together on the event. The final essay is more than fitting to end the book as it redefines the Negro's necessity to strive for and never forget the pursuit of freedom and equality. There were instances when it seemed each individual had a secret knowledge that decades later others would read his/her words and learn positive things from the experience. I respect James McPherson for having the courage to write without prejudice but maintain and provide factual evidence that the African-American was not simply rescued but by the blood, sweat and tears of thousands of his brothers and sisters aided in liberating himself. The author gives a refreshing look at the "colored" man as he verifies that he is a citizen by right as well as an important part of the history of the United States whose story should not be neglected by any.

The Ninety-Day Wonders: OCS and the Modern American Army
Published in Paperback by Dr. Milton M. McPherson (01 April, 2001)
Author: Dr. Milton M. McPherson
Average review score:

Covers more then OCS.
This book is a great history of the Army Officers Candidate School. Even better it gives a large amount of readable information on what the U.S. Army went through in it's efforts to mobilize for both WWI and WWII. It does a fine job of distinguishing the challenges that faced the Army in these two very different situations. Even though I'm an alumni of the OCS program I wasn't aware that in WWI less then one percent of the company commanders in France had more then one year of service! Most of us are still pretty wet between the ears at one year. The author writes in a style that is understandable and enjoyable.

The Northern Navajo Frontier, 1860-1900: Expansion Through Adversity
Published in Hardcover by University of New Mexico Press (September, 1988)
Author: Robert S. McPherson
Average review score:

A welcome addition to Native American history reading lists
Robert McPherson's The Northern Navajo Frontier 1860-1900: Expansion Through Adversity is an amazing and informative examination of how the Navajos successfully defended and expanded their territory in an era when most Native Americans lost their lands. Focusing on the northern frontier borderlands and the "aggressive defensive" used to hold on to them, largely without making war, The Northern Navajo Frontier 1860-1900 is a revealing look at how it is possible for a people to survive even when they are outnumbered and outgunned. The scholarly, college-level text is meticulously researched and preoccupied with truly understanding what was truly happening on the Northern Navajo Frontier and why during the specified period of 40 years. A most fascinating and thought-provoking study, The Northern Navajo Frontier 1860-1900 is an impressive and welcome addition to Native American history reading lists and reference collections.

A Book I Will Read Again
My mother handed me this book--I thought "Oh no another school book." When I started I discovered how incredible a 17th century mathematician can be.This book is especially good if you try to work out the mathematical equations it contains. This is a very good book.Though it would not make much sense to people younger than 13.READ THIS BOOK. I am going to read it again.
